Rock It! #141, p. 55: PETER WILSON Freedom's Door / 39:40 min. Dr. Music Records / Noble For fans of: Nothing But Thieves, Bring Me The Horizon, Deftones

The frontman of New York prog rockers Four Trips Ahead opens his solo album “Freedom’s Door” with very quiet sounds that suddenly transform into a hard, modern musical hurricane called “Release”. Wilson takes long strides through the forest of modern alternative rock and does not do so on well-worn paths. He also experiments with song structures that are more commonly used in progressive rock (“Broken”) or incorporates stylistic elements of modern metal with a double bass drum (“Now There’s Nothing”). In general, the man with the diverse singing voice loves it powerful and really hard. At times you even expect a death metal voice to be heard (“Touch”), but Wilson sings clearly, alternating between tender and hard and refrains from growls. He can also be ballad-like at times, almost poppy, like in “Mirror”, but finds his hardness again within the song. With his first solo album, the New Yorker delivers twelve songs that mostly bang and press and leave no time for breathing space. And if it does, these are immediately replaced by harsh sounds. An interplay that is actually fun.

(8/10, Jürgen Will)

The majority of the songs sound immensely engaging and also rock cool! […] A solo debut that leaves you wanting more. Solid hard rock made in the USA! PETER WILSON also broadens the horizons for artists who tend to fly under the radar here.
